What SAP TM does

The core is transportation requirement planning. Customer orders, deliveries or purchase orders become freight units, which the planner bundles into freight orders manually or via the optimizer. The VSR optimizer factors in time windows, vehicle capacities, costs and constraints and proposes a solution no human could calculate at that speed.

Then comes the assignment. SAP TM tenders orders to carriers automatically, either by fixed award under contract or via a bidding process. Freight cost calculation runs on stored rates, and settlement generates documents you can check against the carrier's invoice. This is exactly where many companies recover a substantial share of the project cost, because incorrect charges become visible.

SAP TM is connected to the warehouse (SAP EWM), to visibility across the network (SAP Global Track and Trace) and to carrier communication (SAP Business Network for Logistics). Embedded or standalone

Since S/4HANA, TM is available embedded in the ERP. For most shippers that is the right choice: one database, no interface effort, lower operating costs. A standalone TM system pays off mainly when a logistics service provider serves multiple clients or the transport volume exceeds the scope of the embedded approach. Which path fits is decided by your volumes, your system landscape and your migration roadmap. We make that assessment before the project, not midway through.

What does an SAP TM implementation cost?

It depends on scope: pure freight cost settlement is implemented far faster than full planning with optimizer and tendering. After a one-day scoping workshop we give you a solid range in person-days instead of a ballpark figure.

Is SAP TM worth it even for smaller transport volumes?

From a few hundred shipments per week, automating freight cost auditing usually pays off on its own. For smaller, less complex scenarios, SAP Logistics Management is often the leaner alternative.

We're still on SAP ECC. Do we have to move to S/4HANA first?

Not necessarily. A standalone TM can also be connected to ECC. Still, it makes sense to think about the TM rollout together with the S/4HANA roadmap rather than touching it twice.

How long does a migration from TM 9.x take?

It depends heavily on how many custom developments and special processes sit in the legacy system. We review that at the start and separate what can become standard from what really needs to stay custom.
